 Christofias faces London lashing

Monday, May 12, 2008

Cyprus’ President is in for a rough reception when he visits London later this month...

British ex pats frustrated with an inept judicial system in Cyprus are to protest at Alexandra Palace London on May 18 where President Demetris Christofias is due to address a gathering of the Cypriot community.

A statement from the organizers said: “Problems suffered by property victims range from the non-issuing of title deeds, structural faults, illegal building and developers extorting immovable property tax and transfer fees.  Many of the victims are currently resident in Cyprus but will be represented at the protest by their offspring”.

Fronting the protest is Connor O’Dwyer, 38, from Surrey who bought a house off plan in Cyprus in 2005 and has since entered in to a lengthy legal battle.

O’Dwyer said: “Crooked Developers and Lawyers in Cyprus act with impunity.  My developer has kept all my money and managed to sell my house to another family despite my contract being logged in the Lands Registry.

Two thumbs up for Christofias

The protest comes after a recent Noverna poll revealed that three in four Greek Cypriots approved President Demetris Christofias’ first two months in office.

Christoforos Christoforou, University of Nicosia electoral analyst noted: “The honeymoon period has been filled with positive moves made by the President, such as the opening of Ledra Street and the immediate institution of the working committees

”The high approval rating shows that the public is interested in the prospects of a solution. Christofias does not conduct himself based on promises, but on delivery.

Cyprus University political science professor Joseph Joseph added: "The high marks are owed to Christofias' breaking a four-year deadlock on reunification talks. Nothing was happening for four years, and people are now happy to see something happening”.
